For a thousand years, writers have been sitting in coffee shops (and bars) writing stories.



It's Sunday afternoon and I am sitting in Nordstrom's cafe, at the entrance to Nordstrom's store in a high end mall, sipping Nordstrom's coffee, watching Nordstrom's shoppers.

After an hour or so of boredom, the people are so much the same - shopping, walking around, mingling with friends - I begin to notice how women dress and how men dress.

Women's style is all about their body. I see spandex to show off hour-glass curves, low cut blouse to show off cleavages, mini-skirts to show off legs, short shorts to show off butt cheeks, tight jeans to show off both hips and legs at the same time, and yoga pants to show off ... well you know what.

Then there are the women in sweats to hide their apple curves, long tunics to hide their hips, and baggy clothes to hide their weight.

Men's fashion is about a look and rarely about their body unless you are a gym rat. Gym rats show off their six-pack abs muscles and that's about it for men's bodies. That guy with the horrible and unhealthy beer barrel belly wears a tee and doesn't make any attempt to hide it.

Men wear tees and jeans if they are going for the comfortable suburban simplicity, low thigh-waisted baggy pants with long white tees if they are going for the urban funk look, football jerseys if they are going for the sport fanatic look, fitted suits, yes men still wear suits, if they are going for the mad-men look, bow ties if they are going for the professorial look, and sweater with dress pants if they are going for the outdated preppy look.

Fashion is hard on women. You name a body part or two and women are showing it off. If women are worriers, they use fashion to cover up the offending part.

Men have it easy. Men only care about one body part, the one that does all their thinking, the one where size matters, but, here is the dark side, there is no covering up a shortage there.

It's funny how you can learn new things. About 20 years ago in Northwest Atlanta, an apartment building burned flat. It was December, and the area was experiencing a cold snap. One man was especially cold because he hadn't paid his power bill and his heat was shut off. He had one heat source: a barbecue grill that sat outside on his balcony. He dragged it into the living room, tossed in half a bag of charcoal briquettes, and lit it. He was reasonably warm and comfortable for part of the night.  But then something happened. You sure 'bout that?

                          Important announcement to my faithful readers (all four of them): I'm employed again. My last gig was, shall we say, seasonal employment with a company that lots of people get packages from. That was January and since then I've been living on Social Security. There used to be two Social Security recipients in the house, but now there's just me, so extra income was needed. I had a pretty good idea of the type of work I wanted to do, and as of tomorrow, I'll be working for, well, let's call it a big-box store. This is pretty exciting. So, right after I finished the nuts & bolts part of the interview, where they get my consent to run a background check, etc., the man behind the desk said "Okay, so, if you want, we start orientation tomorrow at, oh, let's say 4:00 p.m. That work for you?" Um...yeah... I mean, you tell me, okay dude? Or should I test this and see if Orientation Dude feels like waiting for me to stroll in at 7:0

There is controversy about the name of the Washington Redskins, an NFL American football team.  American Indians, who are considered to be red in skin color, are opposed to the name of the team.  They feel that it is demeaning.  I cannot speak for American Indians but I do support their right to chose how they are represented in the world. So, the Washington football team will have to change their name. They are dragging their feet about this. They have temporarily chosen The Washington Football Team as a new name. Very unimaginative.   The Washington Football Team should quickly announce a name change as that will force all their fans to buy new sports stuff with the new name. Money, money, and more money for the team.
